DAY 2, Sunday - Arrive in Venice
Benvenuti! Welcome to Italy! Arrive in magical Venice built over a hundred small islands and connected by 400 bridges - an artistic masterpiece. You’ll be warmly greeted by our representatives and taken by Water Taxi to your hotel. Time to relax, before joining your Tour Manager and fellow travelers for a briefing on the magnificent journey through Italy that lies ahead. DAY 3, Monday - Murano, Fairytale Venice, Gondola Ride
The day begins with a boat ride to the island of Murano, known for its artistic Murano glass, then on to fairytale Venice, starting with a walking tour of St. Mark's Square. View the Basilica of San Marco, built over several centuries in a fusion of Byzantine, Roman and Venetian architecture, one of the mightiest of the Venetian monuments. At the pink marble Doge's Palace, view this splendid example of Venetian Gothic architecture, now a museum filled with priceless treasures. Walk via the 17th century Bridge of Sighs, built as a link between the prison and Doge's Palace; its arched white limestone bridge is one of the most recognizable sights in Venice. Balance of the day is at leisure. Later, enjoy a serenaded Gondola Ride along the canals. Definitely one of the pleasures of an Italian holiday! DAY 4, Tuesday - Dazzling Rapallo
Today, a scenic drive to the dazzling port city of Rapallo on the Ligurian Coast between the fishing villages of Portofino and Chiavari. Along the way, savor a delectable lunch that includes some of the region's specialties - aged parmigiano reggiano, prosciutto and perfect local wines. Afterwards, our first sight is of the 16th century Castello sul Mare (Castle-on-the-Sea), Rapallo’s most prominent landmark nestled in the center of the harbor. Enjoy the ambiance at your hotel facing the Bay of Rapallo. In the evening, walk along the palm-fringed beach to charming cafes and trattorias dotting the shore, serving savory seafood and wonderful Ligurian comfort foods

DAY 5, Wednesday - Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The incomparable magnificence of Cinque Terre awaits us today, set amid the most dramatic and rugged coastal scenery in the world! These enchanting fishing villages, surrounded by vineyards producing Liguria’s fine wines, date back to the early medieval period. Built along the steep cliffs on the Italian Riviera, this area has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We travel by coach before boarding a boat to the first small picturesque fishing village that spills down a ravine to the wild and rugged coastline. Look for the 19th century railway that transports villagers from place to place, as cars were banned here over a decade ago! Follow the winding hillside trails with astonishing views, and learn about the unique history and geologic features of this storied region. Then on to the next towns with their natural harbors, where we can admire the coastline from a different perspective. Relax and enjoy a lunch of your choice of traditional favorites. Later, we return to Rapallo after an incredible day of spectacular views. An à la carte dinner in Rapallo caps a truly amazing day

DAY 6, Thursday - Walled City of Lucca, Priceless Florence, Renaissance Lecture
From Rapallo we travel through the rolling Tuscan countryside dotted with olive and fig trees to the lovely walled city of Lucca, a perfectly preserved jewel of medieval architecture. Here, a walking tour highlights the Romanesque churches, the broad 17th century walls that typify the city and cobbled streets exposing layers of history at every turn. A walk along the narrow streets takes us to San Michele with its beautiful piazza, occupying the site of the ancient Roman Forum. Free time to explore and enjoy lunch on your own before continuing to the astonishing Renaissance city of Florence, with its priceless art and architecture. We arrive at our hotel, in one of Florence’s most fashionable locations. Tonight, after dinner at the hotel a guest lecturer enlightens us about the dynamic artistic, political and religious climate that flourished in early Renaissance Florence

DAY 7, Friday - Florence - Art and Architecture
The morning walking tour begins at the extraordinary Uffizi Gallery, a remarkable architectural work, housing one of the best masterpiece art collections in the world. Our guided tour provides insight into the history of the structure and its collections. Originally the private collection of the Medici family, the Palazzo opened to the public in 1765. The tour focuses on exceptional examples of Florentine painting including the works of Giotto, Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci. End the morning tour in Santa Croce square. After a leisurely lunch on your own, the walking tour continues with the open-air Art museum of Signoria Square, center of Florence’s political life since the 14th century, with its landmark Palazzo Vecchio (city hall) dominating the square. See the splendid Ponte Vecchio, also known as the "Old Bridge," until 1218 the only bridge across the Arno in Florence. View Michelangelo's David at the Accademia Gallery - one of the world’s most revered sculptures. On to the magnificent Duomo, with its Brunelleschi designed dome; view the celebrated "Gates of Paradise" by Ghiberti. Enjoy free time to explore Florence at your own pace before returning to your hotel. Dinner à la carte tonight at a popular restaurant

DAY 8, Saturday - Vineyards of Chianti, Wine Tasting
Travel south today into the lush Chianti wine region of Tuscany, a unique landscape of gentle green hills covered with fields of vineyards, olive groves, and small stone villages. The heart of the emblematic Chianti wine region lies in this area between Florence and Siena; its superb quality wines are created by the rare sangiovese grape. A tour of a nearby working vineyard and wine cellar in the heart of the "Chianti Classico" area presents us with an up-close look at the production and aging process used to create these wines. Chianti wine tasting is followed by a delightful country lunch. Return to Florence for an afternoon and evening on your own to revisit some of the museums, gaze at priceless treasures or, independently discover new dining pleasures

DAY 9, Sunday - Train to Rome, Treasures of the Eternal City
This morning, travel by high speed train from Florence to Rome, the astonishing city built on seven hills. Upon arrival at our deluxe hotel, a light lunch is served. Then, a walk through the characteristic "piazzas and vias" stopping to admire the grandeur of the iconic Trevi Fountain, and of course, toss in some coins! Pass the majestic Spanish Steps on the Piazza di Spagna, the longest and widest decorative steps in Europe and the monumental Pantheon, the best preserved of any Roman building with its huge brick dome, the most copied and imitated of all ancient works. Continue to the baroque Piazza Navona, the most acclaimed and arguably the most beautiful of Rome's many squares with its magnificent fountains, built on the site of the 1st century Stadium of Domitian, where great chariot races were once held. Today, the piazza is packed with vendors, street performers and lined with cafes. The evening is on your own to enjoy the endless riches of the Eternal City at your own pace

DAY 10, Monday - Colosseum, Roman Forum, Private Visit to the Vatican Museums*
Step back into history at the massive Colosseum, the largest amphitheater built in the Roman Empire, where over 50,000 spectators witnessed gladiatorial games attended by the Emperor himself. Continue to the legendary Roman Forum, the central part of the city from where ancient Rome developed; view the triumphal Arch of Constantine, erected by the Roman Senate to commemorate his tenth year of leadership over the Eternal City. Leisure time to wander on your own, or, enjoy a casual trattoria lunch. In the evening, a specially arranged exclusive after-hours private visit to the Vatican Museums, to see the riches of the Candelabra Gallery, Map Gallery and the celebrated Tapestries. Our visit culminates with a rare opportunity to walk through the incomparable Sistine Chapel to stand before the great frescoes by Michelangelo without any crowds. Truly, a most memorable experience!

DAY 11, Tuesday - Church of San Clemente, Basilica of St. Peter in Chains
We head to the layered Church of San Clemente an early 12th century church, that was built on top of a 4th century church, which in turn was built over important ancient Roman ruins. We continue to the 5th century Basilica of St. Peter in Chains housing Michelangelo's magnificent Moses, one of the most notable pieces of artwork in Rome. There’s so much more to discover during your afternoon at leisure on your last day in Rome. Our last night in Italy is celebrated with a festive Farewell Reception and Dinner. Bid a fond Arrivederci to your newfound friends and Tour Manager!
