The Koutoubia Mosque in Morocco

Morocco has a number of quite impressive Islamic monuments. Every dynasty that ruled over the country for the past 1000 years had its own contribution, either with an establishment or architectural concepts. Many tourists who travel to Morocco admire the wonderful Islamic monuments they visit there.

The Koutoubia Mosque is certainly one of these impressive Islamic establishments of Morocco. Built around the middle of the 12th century, it is the most marvelous historical mosques of Marrakesh. It was a huge striking construction. However, today, the only astonishing element of the mosque is its wonderful huge minaret.

The minaret of Al Koutoubia Mosque is among the largest and highest in the world. It has a height of 77 meters. This minaret was the source of inspiration of many other marvelous Islamic establishments in the old world including the Hassan Towering Minaret in Rabat.

The minaret was completed around 500 years after the mosque, at end of the 12th century by Al Mansour, Almohad Sultan. Today, a visit to the Mosque and Minaret of Al Koutoubia is included in almost all travel packages to Morocco.
