Rabat

Rabat is the capital of Morocco and the second largest city in the kingdom, after Casablanca. The city is located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and at the outlet of the Bourqraq River.
The name Rabat is derived from the fortress the Berbers built in the past which had the same name   The Almoravids are the ones who established Al Rabat city to be the meeting point of the warriors who were defending Morocco against the attacks of the Barghawata who wanted to take control of the city.
During this period, the city has developed into a civilization and cultural center in Western Africa and a starting point for the military campaigns going towards Spain. Rabat is famous for its many walls that were built during different periods of time as each leader who came to rule over the city added his own walls and fortresses to protect the city. 
Among the most interesting monuments in Rabat is the Hassan Mosque, built during the 11th century AD, A huge mosque that was tremendously affected by the earthquake of 1755. The only remaining item of this religious institute is rectangular shaped silo that is 180 meters long and 140 meters wide. The stones of this stricter was richly decorated with different styles of ornaments.
