Derry city walls in Ireland

The old walls of the city of Derry are among the most distinctive places to explore during a trip to Ireland. Constructed around the beginning of the 17th century to protect the Irish lands, today the walls represent an important historical site.

With around 1 mile of length, there are many interesting places to explore around and inside the walls. The attractions include the Apprentice Boy’s Hall and St. Columb's Cathedral.

In fact, the walls are featured with four original gates. The Ferryquay gate is perhaps the most remarkable.  There is also the Bishop's gate which was replaced by a huge arch in 1789. The walls of Derry are commonly included in many travel packages to Ireland.
