Peter and Paul Fortress

The Peter and Paul Fortress is among the most popular landmarks of Saint Petersburg in Russia. Constructed at the beginning of the 18th century, the fortress was still functioning as a jail and a place for execution.

In modern times, the Fortress of Peter and Paul was transformed into the centerpiece of a huge museum that welcomes hundreds of tourists who travel to Russia. The fortress includes many constructions that revolve around its famous Peter and Paul Cathedral. The most astonishing element of the cathedral is the tall 122 meters’ bell-tower.

There is also the Grand Ducal Mausoleum that was completed in 1908 with its Neo-Baroque architecture and decorative elements. Erected only to host six tombs. However, after the Russian revolution, it held more than13 tombs.
