In 1841, Samuel Shepheard, from Northumberland, England, became the manager of the British Hotel in Cairo, together with Hill, an Englishman. Four Years Later, Hill rlinquished his interest, and Samuel Shepheard bought the British Hotel and changed its name to Shepheard`s. About 1000 years earlier, the grounds on which Shepheard`s Hotel was built, was the site of several Palaces built by Mamelouk rules, and later became the headqarters of Napoleon`s forces commanded by general Kleber. Throughout its long history and until it was burned in 1952, Shepheard`s welcomed kings, queens, heads of states, and Personalities of international fame. Beside the Pyramids, this prominent establishment became the center of attraction of wealthy tourists. During World War ll, Shepheard`s was the rendez-vous place of prominent allied officers, politicians and spies. The present Shepheard Hotel, only a few steps from the site of the old Shepheard`s, retains its same traditions and quality service… a name of real distinction |
